Artist statement
My work has a few threads going through it. The first is the importance of narrative; how narrative can give you a new look on the things around you and create a space to exist within. And the use of narrative as a way to connect to others around us and how these narratives can expand on the normative frameworks presented to us.
The second is a state of becoming within the work, which leaves space for the viewer to give it its future and past. This state of becoming tries to create a space for others to fill in the things they need, want, see, and feel. I want to create a space you recognize, but that doesn't give you all the answers and closes the door behind you. Leave it open, bring in more, bring in other things, add to all that is already there. This creates a space where the work doesn’t exist until it is seen, this seeing gives the work its life line, the same as it does with narratives, because of its sharing nature.
Lastly, the theme of transformation. With this transformation I try to create a space where we can move in a new or different way, for us to move out of our routine and break ourselves open. To take up the space and find a way to transform ourselves into new spaces and forms.
